Gallup: ‘Dishonest’ (Clinton) and ‘Socialist’ (Sanders) Most Common Words Associated with Candidates

By Published on February 23, 2016

The two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination are mostly associated with dishonesty and socialism, according to the latest Gallup poll.

The public’s impression of Hillary Clinton leaves much to be desired. The words that first spring to mind when the public hears Clinton’s name are “dishonest/liar/don’t trust her/poor character.” Clinton’s only saving grace is that she is seen as “capable and experienced.”

“Overall, 29 percent of Americans offer a positive observation about Clinton while 51 percent express something negative,” said Gallup.

The Gallup data appear to mirror research done by British-based pollster YouGov, which found Clinton to be the least honest and trustworthy of all Democratic and Republican candidates.

Asked whether they think Clinton is honest and trustworthy, 56 percent of respondents say she is not. A little more than a quarter of those polled think Clinton is honest and trustworthy.

“Socialist” and “old” are the words most likely to crop up when people hear the name of Clinton’s 74-year old rival Sen. Bernie Sanders. But his overall ratings are significantly better than those of the former secretary of state.

“The public’s comments about Sanders can be summarized as 26 percent positive and 20 percent negative, with the rest categorized as neutral, other or no opinion,” says Gallup.

Republicans are the most likely group to refer to Sanders as a socialist. A recent Gallup poll showed socialist to be the most unappealing type of presidential candidate.

Despite the wider public’s disdain for socialism, the term has become widespread and popular among Democrats. A telephone poll of 1,000 likely Democratic primary voters for the American Action Network showed they preferred socialism to capitalism by a margin of 15 percentage points, with just 25 percent of respondents saying they favored capitalism.
