First World Problems: Gender Neutral Kids Clothes

According to the American Psychiatric Association, something between .005 and .014% of the population suffer from what is clinically known as gender dysphoria. You wouldn’t have guessed such low numbers from the volume of Caitlyn Jenner headlines and the voting habits of those who decide winners and losers at the Golden Globes, but ultimately we are talking about a minute fraction of the population.

This, of course, is no license for someone to mistreat or “hate on” those who feel so uncomfortable in their own bodies that they want to take on the physical characteristics of the opposite gender. Such mean-spirited behavior is disgusting and unconscionable.

But are “hate” and “phobia” the only reasons why someone might not be completely comfortable with the major cultural shifts that now seem to happen once a week – especially when those monumental shifts involve the way young children are exposed to, and educated about, such delicate topics?
