This is How Far Planned Parenthood Will Go for a Talking Point

After suspending one of its abortion clinics in Wisconsin last year because of a staff shortage, Planned Parenthood is now framing its permanent closure as a result of security concerns.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin officials announced Monday they will not reopen the Appleton North clinic, because they “can’t meet sufficient security standards,” reports the Associated Press. They call it a “loss” for women in the state, who will now have a more difficult time aborting their unborn children.

When Planned Parenthood suspended the clinic’s operations in October, officials said it was due to a temporary gap in medical staff. They had planned to reopen six months later, but have since changed their tune following a November shooting in a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic by a crazed man who has been committed to a mental health facility.

Planned Parenthood officials said Monday they reviewed security measures in place at the clinic following the Colorado shooting and have decided the clinic cannot be safely reopened in a “post-Colorado Springs environment.”

It appears the shooting may have provided cover for the clinic’s inability to find doctors willing to perform abortions, while at the same time bolstering a key Planned Parenthood talking point that pro-life activists actually pose a constant physical threat to abortionists.

A spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin emailed The Daily Caller News Foundation the organization’s statement on the closure Monday, and said “The decision not to reopen Appleton North as made to meet our commitment to safety — not due to a staffing shortage.”

“In the months following the Colorado Springs tragedy, we have conducted a thorough security review that included staff trainings to re-enforce our strong security measures,” the statement reads. “Planned Parenthood facilities have strong security measures and highly trained staff to ensure a safe, supportive, welcoming environment for all people to get the high-quality health care they need.”

“Following our extensive review, however, we concluded that our Appleton North facility cannot meet the stringent security standards we have in a post-Colorado Springs environment. As a result, we made the difficult decision not to reopen the Appleton North facility as originally planned.”
