‘Faithless Electors’ Raise Funds for Impending Fines

By Published on December 1, 2016

Colorado Democratic elector Michael Baca has announced that he plans to create a fundraising group to help “faithless electors” pay fines associated with their decision to vote in a way other than directed by their respective states, according to a Hill report Thursday.

“I was opposed, actually, to raising money because I would prefer to just have this done organically,” Baca told The Denver Post. “But we’ve had people throwing money at us through our website.”

Baca filed paperwork with the Colorado secretary of state’s office to create a fundraising arm called the “Hamilton Electors.” The way the group is set up means it can solicit unlimited donations from individuals, corporations or labor unions for political activities, according to The Hill.

Since Baca is supposed to vote for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the electoral college, his protest isn’t about ensuring President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t win. Instead, Baca told Politico earlier this month the goal of the movement is to reduce voter confidence in the electoral college system by exposing the inherent weaknesses in the system.

“If we cannot use the Electoral College as a deliberative process … then we ought to do away with it,” Baca told Politico before Thanksgiving.

“In all likelihood, when it’s all said and done, we’ll probably end up sending that money back to the people,” Baca told The Denver Post.
