‘Dear Jesus, Please Let This Baby Breathe’: Strangers Rescue Infant From Overturned Car

The terrifying rescue of a father and his two children from a car that overturned during the tornadoes in Texas Sunday has been captured on video.

The video, first reported by ABC News affiliate WFAA 8, shows a dramatic scene as several good Samaritans jump into the fast-moving river to help rescue an infant and a toddler from a car that flipped into rushing water near Myrtle Springs, Texas.

At first, a few men went down to the overturned vehicle to help those inside. “There’s a baby in here,” one of the men shouts. More people jumped into the river to help.

The pressure of the rushing water was so strong that it took several people to pry open the doors.

Finally, the rescuers pull out a baby. The child had “No color at all and the eyes were not focused when I looked down at her,” Tom Mitchell, who recorded the video on his phone, told WFAA. The child was a “bluish-gray,” color and needed CPR.

Mitchell put his phone in his pocket to perform CPR on the child, but the audio continues running.

“This baby is gonna die if we don’t start CPR fast,” Mitchell remembers thinking. Mitchell said he had “a negative feeling coming over me. This baby may not make it, this baby may not make it. No reaction, nothing is happening.”

“Dear Jesus, please let this baby breathe,” one woman prays in the background. Finally, the baby starts coughing and crying.

The other child made it out of the vehicle, and was “bleeding from the mouth,” one person says in the video.

The father driving the vehicle later posted from the hospital that both children were recovering.

The tornado and harsh storms over the weekend hit four states, leaving at least 11 people dead and dozens injured, NBC News reports.
