DC Elementary School Sues Anti-Abortion Protesters for Scaring Children

By Published on December 10, 2015

One of the district’s most sought after elementary schools had an abortion clinic move in next-door and now the school is suing protesters it says harass school children.

Two Rivers Public Charter School has been forced to file suit against a group of anti-abortion protesters after they allegedly followed students down alleyways and told them “they kill kids next door,” The Washington Post reports.

In the past, the protesters have allegedly crowded the school’s drop-off lane while students were being released and yelled at their parents to stop the “bloodbath that’s coming,” according to a complaint the school filed in D.C. Superior Court Wednesday.

The issues began in September, when Planned Parenthood decided to move it’s D.C. headquarters to a location right next to the prestigious elementary school.

The Planned Parenthood health center, which will provide abortions and other women’s health care, isn’t set to open until next spring, but the protesters started showing up right before school started.

Students and parents were met by protesters when they showed up for a conference prior to the beginning of classes, and called police because protesters were threatening people.

Since then, protesters have routinely showed up in front of the school to wave images of aborted fetuses and signs about dead babies. One of the defendants in the lawsuit, Jonathan Darnel, told the Post it is “typical of our culture” to “blame the messenger instead of the message.”

“They should be filing a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood for moving in there and building this place next to their school,” he said.

Two Rivers has been operating out of its current location at 1227 4th Street Northeast, which is a few blocks from the NoMa-Galludet University Metro station, since 2007.

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Inc. currently runs its operations out of a downtown location near Farragut Square, where it has been for more than 40 years.

Up until 2011, the School for Arts In Learning, a separate public charter school, operated right next door to the Planned Parenthood headquarters without incident.

The school closed in 2011 due to financial issues.
