Christmas Eve Shooting at Charlotte Mall. Gunman Killed by Police

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A gunman was shot and killed at Northlake Mall in Charlotte after an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon, according to WSOC.

A massive police response along with ambulances and paramedics were called to the mall in north Charlotte just after 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. SWAT has also been called in.

Traffic appeared to be in a gridlock as people tried to leave the mall.

Paramedics said they were treating one person with a leg injury and a woman who went into labor.

An altercation in a store at the mall led to the gunfire, Shauntelle Hamrick, the manager of the Journeys shoe store, told CNN. Hamrick says she watched as a group of people “ganged up” on a man. During the fight, someone pulled a gun, and a friend of the man was shot. It is not clear how badly he is wounded.

Witnesses said off-duty police confronted the gunman and told him to drop his weapon, and when he did not, officers shot that person.

WSOC spoke with a football coach who was inside the mall when the shots rang out. He said he heard pops that sounded like gunfire. He then saw a stampede of people and heard screaming before he was ushered into a back room of a store in the mall.

Police are asking people looking for lost relatives at the mall to go to the AMC Movie Theater parking lot.
