California Offers Class to Teach Nurses How to Reverse Medication Abortions

By Published on January 4, 2018

The California Board of Registered Nursing approved a class that will teach nurses how to reverse the effects of abortion pills for women who change their mind shortly after taking them.

The board had previously decided to cut the course but, following encouragement from Heartbeat International — a nonprofit pregnancy crisis center — the board decided to go forward with the course after all. Heartbeat International’s mission is to save lives and discourage abortions in the U.S. and elsewhere.

“We thought it would be more paperwork involved and more of a protracted process,” Heartbeat spokesman Jay Hobbs said according to BPNews. “In the end, really what we saw was them … conceding that this is a science-based approach to medicine, that there’s just no good grounds to stop nurses from learning about that,” he added.

“There are actual babies that are toddling around or [were] being held by moms this Christmas because of that process,” he continued. “We really are just thankful to have more of a platform to save lives.”

The class approval comes after the board’s initial decision to approve the course in August, followed by a later ruling in September positing otherwise. The Thursday decision then, marks the board’s third ruling on the class and it remains to be seen whether the decision will hold.

The Abortion Pill Reversal’s website says its goal is to reverse the effects of a chemically induced abortion within the first 24 hours of taking mifepristone or RU-486. The reversal pill floods the woman’s body with progesterone to counteract the abortion pill and reports a 55 percent success rate of saving pregnancies.
