Black Guns Matter Aims to Lower Black on Black Crime

The founder of the group Black Guns Matter is teaching black communities how to use guns legally in an effort to bring down black on black crime and altercations with police.

Founder Maj Toure said he wants to teach people how to use guns properly in an effort to bring down crime and police altercations, reports the Independent Journal. An NRA member, Toure believes as more people become knowledgeable about the law, police officers will give them more respect.

“We get all the love in the hood. We’re getting them information that they didn’t have access to before. I teach people that certain things — like guns — are made taboo, but they have to fight for their rights to gun ownership. That they have to fight for it, stand on that right that they already have,” Toure said.

Toure has been criticized in the past for promoting the idea of carrying a gun legally. He says there is a stigma around carrying a gun, especially in areas like Philadelphia.

“What we’re trying to do is say that just because you have a gun doesn’t make you the bad guy. But while you have your firearm, which you have the right to have, you have to be a responsible, card-carrying good guy,” Toure told Bearing Arms.

He also has advice for those who interact with police officers, saying, “make no furtive moves, never jump out of a car on a police officer and don’t ever explain more than what protocol requires.”

According to Toure, one of the rewarding parts of his organization is showing an elderly person how to properly use a gun.

“There’s tremendous love toward this effort. It’s not enough to quantify, but I show a 70 year old woman how to properly take care of fire arms and that’s empowering to her,” Toure said.
