American students wounded in an acid attack from a mentally ill woman in France have forgiven their attacker and urged others to pray for her.

A mentally ill woman threw a weak solution of hydrochloric acid in the faces of four U.S. college students at a train station in Marseille on Sunday, but the students have shown compassion in return, according to Aleteia.

Courtney Siverling, a Boston University student, wrote on Facebook the same day of the attack to not only let her friends and family know she would fully recover, but also to offer forgiveness to her attacker and urge others to pray that Jesus would heal the woman from her mental illness.

“I pray that the attacker would be healed from her mental illness in the name of Jesus and receive the forgiveness and salvation that can only come from Him,” Silvering said in her post.

Michelle Krug, who got some of the acidic solution in her eye, also posted to Facebook to reassure friends and family and to ask that they pray for their attacker and show compassion to those suffering from mental illness in general.

“Mental illness is not a choice and should not be villainized,” Krug said in her post.

French authorities said the attacker was “disturbed” and that there is no evidence linking her attack to terrorism or Islamic extremism, according to the Associated Press.

The four girls — Silvering, Krug, Kelsey Kosten and Charlotte Kaufman — were released from the hospital and returned to Paris Monday. The girls are all members of the 2019 class of Boston College, which is a Jesuit Catholic university. They intend to continue their study abroad program in Europe.
