Alaska Moves to Bar Planned Parenthood From Schools
Alaska took a step toward barring Planned Parenthood from its schools Friday when the state Senate passed a bill that would ban abortion providers from teaching sex education in the classroom.
One Democrat joined 10 Republican senators to vote in favor of the bill, which would also give parents authority to remove their child from any activity, class, standardized test or program they find objectionable, reported Education Week. Parents would have to give permission for their child to attend sex ed classes.
Wasilla Sen. Mike Dunleavy is confident the bill will move forward, and describes it as a measure to prevent unwanted indoctrination of kids in schools, and likened abortion providers teaching sex ed to the National Rifle Association being allowed a platform in the classroom.
“Let’s be straight, abortion providers are a business,” the Republican senator said, according to Education Week. “They’re in our schools to recruit our kids as agents of their business and they’re in our schools to recruit kids for potential clients later on down the road.”
Volunteers affiliated with abortion providers are also banned from classrooms under the bill.
Planned Parenthood called the bill “unconstitutional” in a statement reported by a local news outlet. The measure would implement “unconstitutional restrictions on the education available to communities across the state,” the statement said.
