Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of parliament for Germany’s Left party, was hit in the face with a chocolate cake Saturday for suggesting Germany should have a limit on the number of refugees it accepts.

The Left party’s meeting in the city of Magdeburg was cut short after an “anti-fascist” protester attacked Wagenknecht. The activist wanted to make a statement against the “enemies of mankind” who oppose unlimited immigration, according to a woman from the same activist group.

Wagenknecht, who serves as the co-parliamentary leader for the party, has been criticized by her fellow party members for opposing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-border policies.

Despite being a second generation immigrant with socialist values, Wagenknecht said “not all refugees can come to Germany” last October. After the mass sexual assaults in Cologne on New Year’s Eve, she suggested the perpetrators should not be welcome in Germany.

“Those who abuse the right of hospitality, lose the right to hospitality,” Wagenknecht said in January.

The Left party has distanced itself from Wagenknecht’s immigration remarks. Germany took more than one million refugees in 2015.
