What Does 9/11 Mean to Our Children?

Most young adults on Staten Island, and certainly their parents, can remember, and tell you, exactly where they were the moment the first plane hit the first tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

But what of the generation of Staten Island students born after 9/11? The oldest children, born in 2001, should be in high school this year. The youngest school-age children, born in 2010, should be starting pre-K.

What do they know — if anything — about 9/11?

Where are they getting their information about 9/11? Is it from family members, parents, or their teachers in school?

What does 9/11 mean to this generation? Is it something distant and relegated to social studies class, even though it happened in our own backyard?
