5 Times Queen Elizabeth Was the Coolest

By Amelia Hamilton Published on September 9, 2015

Today, Queen Elizabeth II officially became the long-reigning monarch of Great Britain, a record previously held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

Here are five times we especially loved QE2.

1. In February of 1945, then Princess Elizabeth joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a driver and mechanic.

2. In 1947, Elizabeth married the dashing Philip Mountbatten. With war rationing still underway, she had to save her clothing coupons to have a wedding gown made. Around the country, regular people sent her their own coupons, but she sent them back with her thanks.

3. In 1993, Queen Elizabeth visited the National Shooting Centre in Surrey. She looks pretty good with an L85 Battle Rifle, doesn’t she?

4. With the Olympics in London in 2012, the Queen and her famous corgis appeared in a video shown at the opening ceremonies. Her co-star? None other than James Bond.

5. When she photobombed these Australian hockey players at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
